Jaecoo versus Toyota for West Africa: a fair comparison
Buyers who know Toyota well are now asking about Jaecoo, a newer brand whose J5, J7 and J8 SUVs we list brand new from the UAE. This guide compares the two ranges as they appear on our own listings. We only use specifications we publish, and where we have no figure, such as power or fuel economy for the Jaecoo range, we say so rather than guess.
What each range covers on our listings
The Jaecoo range we list is three SUVs. The J5 is a compact five-seat petrol SUV in Urban, Luxury and Elite trims. The J7 is a mid-size five-seat SUV, offered as a petrol model in Comfort, Luxury and Flagship trims and as the J7 SHS plug-in hybrid in Smart, Trend and Trend Two Tone trims. The J8 is a seven-seat large SUV in Luxury FWD, Premium 2.0T AWD and Flagship AWD trims.
The new Toyotas we list are body-on-frame four-wheel drives and a pickup: the Land Cruiser 300 with a 4.0 V6 or 3.5 V6 twin-turbo petrol, the Land Cruiser Prado with a 2.8 turbo-diesel or 2.4 turbo petrol, and the Hilux double cab, including a 2.7 petrol 4x2.
Body type and drive
This is the biggest difference. Our Toyota Land Cruiser 300 and Prado listings have full-time four-wheel drive, and both models are body-on-frame designs. Our Jaecoo listings are road-focused SUVs: the J8 is offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive depending on trim, and we do not list the Jaecoo models as body-on-frame or off-road vehicles. If you regularly drive on unmade roads, through flooded sections or far from paved routes, the Toyota four-wheel drives are built for that. If your driving is mostly in and between towns on paved roads, a Jaecoo may do the job at a lower price.
Seats
The Jaecoo J5 and J7 have five seats; the J8 has seven. The Land Cruiser 300 and Prado listings have seven seats, and the Hilux double cab has five. If you need seven seats, the comparison is between the Jaecoo J8 and the Toyota Prado or Land Cruiser 300.
Engines and fuel
The Jaecoo J5, J7 petrol and J8 are petrol models, with the J8 Premium listed with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol. The J7 SHS is a plug-in hybrid. We do not publish power, acceleration or fuel economy figures for the Jaecoo range, so we make no claim about them here.
Among our new Toyota listings, the Prado offers a 2.8 turbo-diesel, which some buyers prefer where diesel is the more common fuel. The Land Cruiser 300 listings are petrol. A plug-in hybrid such as the J7 SHS can run on petrol alone, but to use its electric range it needs regular charging, so think about whether you can charge where you live and work.
Price and condition
Every Jaecoo we list is brand new, 2026 model year, GCC specification, left-hand drive and 0 km, with a fixed price in US dollars charged in US dollars. They are the lower priced of the two ranges by a wide margin. Our new Toyotas are also listed with fixed prices on each listing page. Compare the listing pages directly, then choose your destination at checkout to see the full total with shipping and optional insurance.
Origin and shipping
The Jaecoo range ships from the UAE. Several of our new Toyotas ship from China and some from the UAE. Each listing states its origin, and checkout adds freight from that origin. Sailings from the Gulf and Asia take longer than from Europe, and the sailing is confirmed when shipping is booked.
Parts, servicing and resale
Toyota has been sold in West Africa for a long time, and many buyers already know a workshop that services one. Jaecoo is a newer name. We do not make claims about dealer networks, parts supply or resale values in any country, so ask locally before you buy, especially if you live outside a main city.
Which should you choose?
Choose a Toyota Land Cruiser 300 or Prado if rough roads, four-wheel drive and a long track record matter most. Choose a Jaecoo if you want a brand-new, well-equipped SUV at a lower fixed price and your driving is mainly on paved roads. Whichever you choose, you pay in full before shipping, and destination duty, VAT and clearance are paid at your end. We do not quote duty; confirm the current rules with your customs authority.
